October is here and it’s time for my ingredient of the month! In my garden, we have a lovely apple tree which can be seen below, and now is the perfect time to pick cooking apples and that’s why they are ingredient of the month. Apples are such a versatile ingredient which can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes.
Here are some of my ideas of things that you can do with apples.
1. Apple Pie
My late grandmother’s recipe for apple pie is one of my favourites. She was a fantastic cook and I love looking up her old recipes It’s so easy to make and the recipe can be found here.
2. Make your own apple flavoured vodka
Get some decent enough vodka, I’m not talking the gut rot supermarket own brand stuff, but maybe a smirnoff would do the trick. Don’t use premium brands for this! In a kilner jar, core a couple of apples (this depends on the size of the jar) and cover with the vodka. Leave to infuse for a couple of weeks. Taste the vodka to see if the taste is good enough and there you have apple flavoured vodka! I recommend a pink lady apple as it is nice and sweet and will go well with the vodka!
3. Make a blood building juice
This is based on a Jason Vale juice called the blood booster. Great to kickstart your body in the morning.
- 2 fresh betroot peeled and chopped up
- 4 golden delicious apples, cored and chopped
- 4 carrots, chopped
- 1 unwaxed lemon, chopped
- 1 avocado, chopped
In a juicer, place the beetroot, apples, carrots and lemon. Once the juice has been extracted, pour into a blender. Add the avocado and some ice and blend. Once blend serve immediately and enjoy your day with a blood boosting kick! A great way to eat apples!
4. Mini healthy apple puddings
This was a recipe that I was taught at a Spanish cooking class in Barcelona
The photo doesn’t say much but it really is very tasty! It’s a healthy dessert and the recipe can be found here.
5. Toffee apples
As it’s Halloween at the end of the month, toffee apples are a must! BBC Good Food has a great recipe for toffee apples so don’t be shy, get making your toffee apples!
